Certificate recevied from W R Jones, Coroner for southern district of Breconshire
Delwen wrote to EJW on 17 Aug 2011: I remember my father talking about this. The lad had done well at the commercial school but couldn’t get a job because of the economic situation so someone in the family got him a job at the quarry, where as it says, he got caught in the winch and literally torn apart. My father spoke with great disgust of the quarry owners because the had sent the mangled body home to the lad’s mother in a sack Delwen |

Narrative
Margaret Wells writes, 5 Nov 2010:
Stuart died aged about 17. He was waiting to go to college and had a summer job at Vaynor Quarry when he died in an accident with ropes. She says he was a very popular and much loved member of the family and everyone was devastated when he died. She remembers him as a teenager, probably about 10 years older than her, sitting against the wall outside the Rising Sun with his friends. Mum says he was the youngest son but Marion was probably younger, a similar age to Winnie who was born in about 1916. The Merthyr Express archive might have info on Stuart's death. Merthyr Library again?
Narrative
Margaret Wells writes, 12 Jan 2011:
Emrys - attached birth and death certs for Stuart Thomas as previously discussed. Clearly the right person.
Apart from being Stewart at birth and Stuart at death he was also George and Hewitt. I didn't know Mary (Polly) held the Hewitt name, although Mum has always said that was given to the firstborn so that tallies for Mary and it would appear then that Stewart was also the firstborn. My brother David also has Hewitt in his name though Mum has always complained that Dad put an unwanted "e" at the end! William Hewitte Williams however, the first one we have documented has the "e". I must try and find the origins of our Hewitt/e!
The death cert makes for grim reading and confirms the tale Mum told me of Stewart being "caught in the ropes". What a terrible tragedy.
The addresses are familiar. I used to stay at 3 Maesteg Cottages with Nancy (dau of Claudia - sister of Charles B Williams) and Harry (Henry Vivian)Thomas (son of Polly (Mary) Williams and Will Thomas and brother of Stewart). Nancy and and Harry were married and first cousins. They had no children (I understand from Mum that Nancy was unable to have have children and hence they were allowed to marry).
[Margaret later agreed she had made a mistake over the birth order. Sturat was the youngest son.]
